Renting a roll-off dumpster is one of the easiest ways to get rid of junk, remodeling debris, and unwanted household items. But not everything is allowed inside.
At Wizard Roll Off Dumpsters, we keep things simple with flat-rate pricing and clear guidelines. Here’s what you can and can’t toss in your dumpster so you can avoid extra fees or rejected loads.
What You CAN Put in a Dumpster
✔️ Household Junk
Old furniture, toys, boxes, bikes, clothing, mattresses*, rugs, non-hazardous electronic items, and general clutter.
✔️ Remodeling & Construction Debris
Drywall, lumber, cabinets, flooring, tile, carpet and pad, subfloor, siding, windows, and doors.
✔️ Roofing Materials
Shingles, nails, underlayment, and tar paper. (For roofing projects, we can advise the most cost effective option based on the size of your roof.)
✔️ Clean-Out Materials
Basement, attic, or garage junk—if it’s non-hazardous and non-liquid, it usually qualifies.
✔️ Non-Hazardous Waste
Cardboard, packaging, plastics, and other general debris from home projects.
What You CAN’T Put in a Dumpster
To keep things safe (and legal), some items must be handled separately. Tossing them in your dumpster may lead to added charges or refused pickup.
❌ Hazardous Materials
- Paint, solvents, thinners
- Pesticides, chemicals, pool treatments
- Propane tanks, fuel containers, compressed gas cylinders
- Batteries of any kind, or anything with a battery in it
❌ Electronics & Appliances
TVs, monitors, computers, printers, refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, dehumidifiers.
❌ Gasoline powered tools
Lawn mowers, snowblowers, weed whips, leaf blowers, generators, or pressure washers. Some facilities do not accept these at all (Hennepin County), others will with prior approval and all fluids drained.
❌ Tires
The dumpster is the most expensive option for tires, it’s generally better to bring them to a tire shop or county disposal facility
❌ Yard Waste
Grass, leaves, brush, and tree branches are restricted by state law, and cannot be place in trash or construction debris dumpsters. Yard waste must be diverted to a compost site. If you have a large yard cleanup project, we are happy to rent you a dumpster specifically for yard waste to be delivered to a compost facility in accordance with state law.
❌ Medical Waste
Needles, medications, or anything labeled biohazard.
❌ Asbestos or Lead-Based Debris
These require separate disposal and have additional packaging requirements to protect the general public. Please get in touch with us if you have asbestos disposal needs.
May Be Allowed (With Prior Approval/Fee)
Let us know before your delivery if you plan to include:
- Mattresses/Box Springs
- Furniture with stuffing or fabric (couches, loveseats, recliners, large padded chairs)
- Grills, metal cabinets, treadmills/exercise equipment, other large metal debris (some facilities are picky about this stuff, let us know if you will be including them)
Not Sure? Ask Wizard First.
We’re happy to clarify what goes in and what stays out. It’s our goal to keep your project running smoothly – without surprise charges or slowdowns.
